Innovation Challenge - Prolong the Lifecycle
July 12, 2024
In the pursuit of the next major innovation that prolongs the lifespan of products, Mirka is launching a global innovation competition to accelerate the green transition within the manufacturing industry.
The Mirka Innovation Challenge provides an opportunity for innovators to take their ideas and transform them into successful business concepts. The challenge is open for individuals, early-stage start-ups, and other participants. Through the innovation challenge, Mirka aims to discover new concepts that can extend product lifespans, as well as new sustainable technologies, processes, materials, and business models.
Repairing, remanufacturing, and refurbishing products are effective methods for extending their lifespan. Within the EU, the remanufacturing industry is expected to grow from 30 billion euros to 90 billion euros by 2030. Nearly all surfaces undergo surface treatment during the manufacturing process, making this treatment a crucial factor in reducing the carbon footprint.
“The green transition brings new growth opportunities within the manufacturing industry. Through the innovation challenge, Mirka hopes to find new ideas on how to extend the lifecycle of products, preferably by using innovative surface treatment techniques. At Mirka, we believe in strong growth in areas such as remanufacturing and circularity, and we look forward to ideas that we can further develop and bring to the market,” says Mats Sundell, R&D Director at Mirka.
In addition to a cash prize, the competition winner will have the opportunity to apply for a spot in M.Inc, Mirka’s incubator, which provides access to a professional network of experts and support for developing business concepts. The competition also offers participants guidance from Mirka’s experts to refine their ideas and concepts.
In the competition process, participants’ contributions will be evaluated in three rounds, ultimately selecting finalists who will present their innovations at the final event on October 31st.
Submissions for the competition can be sent through M.Inc’s website (https://www.minc.fi/innovation-challenge) until July 21st.
“I wish all innovators good luck and hope for active participation,” says Mats Sundell.
