Mirka® DEROS II 750CV Q&A with Chris Proffit

With the recent introduction of the Mirka® DEROS II 750CV, we spoke to Chris Proffit, Business Sector Manager for the Construction and Decoration industry, to get the lowdown on the latest addition to the Mirka DEROS® family! Here’s what Chris had to say.

What are the benefits of a 175mm Mirka® DEROS over other sizes that are available?

This sander has been designed for large sanding areas, so the 175mm sanding pad enables quicker and flatter sanding of large surfaces. I see this as a specialist option for large areas, whereas the 125/150mm sanders are good general sanding options and the 77mm is a little bit more specialist again.

The 175mm also fills a gap between the 150mm Mirka® DEROS II and the 225mm Mirka® LEROS.

Why would you choose the 175mm DEROS over the Mirka® LEROS?

That is a really tough question as I love the Mirka® LEROS and LEROS-S! I would not say this tool replaces these sanders, but I see where you are coming from. I would say the Mirka® LEROS machines are still the best option for sanding walls and ceilings, or any large application where you need a bit more reach. The choice between a Mirka® LEROS or a Mirka® DEROS II 750 is a personal preference. If you are looking for a handheld or more compact solution, you might prefer the 750 machine over the LEROS, for example, if you have a small van or not much space.

Are the accessories interchangeable with other Mirka® DEROS models?

Yes and no. The Mirka® DEROS II 750CV uses the same power cable, hose and pad spanner as the Mirka® DEROS II 150mm or 125mm. The accessory we are asked about the most is the backing pad – can I put the 175mm backing pad on my 150mm machine? Which you cannot do. The spindles for the backing pads are different and it is very important that you never switch around the backing pads. The reason for this is to keep the machines balanced, which is vital for the health of the machine.
Other accessories such as the abrasives and edge protector are also different from the 150mm. However, the Mirka® DEROS II 750CV actually comes with an edge protector in the box.

What abrasives are available for this new size machine?

We have a range of abrasives available. Obviously, Abranet® comes to mind first of all, which was the first ever net abrasive and is designed for dust-free sanding. In fact, the complete Abranet® range is available in 175mm discs – Abranet® Ace and Abranet® Ace HD. Other abrasives include Abralon® and Galaxy, which I see being used in the marine and transport sectors.

What applications would you recommend the Mirka® DEROS II 750 for?

This will be a great tool for sanding walls, where the area is large, and you want a flat surface. Other applications would include marine production and applications within the transport sector such as trains. This sander is ideal for anybody who is looking for a more efficient way to sand large areas.

What about dust extraction?

As you would expect from a Mirka® DEROS II machine, the 750 is optimised for dust-free sanding. The sander has 37 holes in the backing pad and increased vacuum pressure. It is designed to be used with Abranet® abrasives and Mirka dust extraction.

This is a bigger machine, so I expect this sander weighs more? Can you tell me how the ergonomics of this bigger machine have been affected?

Although the pad size is bigger, this machine only weighs 1.1kg, which is the same as our 650CV and 680CV 150mm machines. Despite being designed for large surfaces, this sander retains the original Mirka® DEROS’ hallmark features of being lightweight, having a low profile and being easy to handle.
