Cleaner Environment

Committed to sustainability, we strive to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, with a strong focus on optimizing the responsible use of raw materials.

Transforming the Entire Abrasives Industry

Best Available Technology

Mirka’s next generation abrasives such as Iridium, Galaxy and Ultimax Ligno are made with best available technology, representing the most effective and advanced technology, uniquely used by Mirka. This manufacturing technique supports the green transition and is based on technology that could transform the entire abrasives industry in the coming years - it represents the highest standard of performance.

“We have developed a unique production technology to manufacture abrasives with a significantly smaller environmental footprint than traditional abrasives on the market.”
CEO Stefan Sjöberg, Mirka

With energy consumption at just 10% of a conventional production line and the use of advanced manufacturing technology, the environmental footprint is significantly reduced. Moreover, this innovative technology allows elimination of harmful chemicals like formaldehyde from the manufacturing process.

To sum up, beyond reducing its impact on climate change, the new production technology offers environmental benefits such as:

  • Less production waste
  • Less chemicals in production processes
  • Less energy used
  • Optimization of raw material usage

A Zero Waste Future:
Our Commitment in Action

Our vision is a future with zero waste. That is why we are continuously working to design more and more Mirka products for reuse or recycling, striving towards a world where zero waste becomes the standard.

At Mirka, minimizing waste is a daily priority and a natural part of how we work. Our zero waste vision is more than just a commitment—it’s an ongoing effort to reduce environmental impact and use resources wisely through continuous improvements at every stage of our operations.

Key Focus Areas Driving Our Vision of Zero Waste

  Optimizing Raw Material Usage

We continuously refine our manufacturing processes to minimize excess material use, ensuring that every resource is utilized efficiently. With our investments in unique best available production technology, we can minimize waste and optimize raw material usage.

Recycling and Responsible Waste Management

By recycling and repurposing production side streams and using recycled materials, we can reduce waste and lower our environmental footprint.

Sustainable Product Development

In our product development, we continuously explore new ways to eliminate waste. From the very start, we strive to design products with circular principles in mind, ensuring longer lifespans and easy maintenance. Our circular abrasives are a prime example of this disruptive innovation, redefining industry standards.

Use of Innovative Raw Materials

Circularity and the effort to achieve zero waste begin with reducing the use of virgin raw materials. Our ongoing product development focuses for example on bio-based resins, circular grains, and recycled backing materials.

Toward a Fossil-Free Future

Mirka is committed to reducing its reliance on fossil-based energy and continuously strives to improve energy efficiency. All our production sites in Finland except Nurmijärvi site use 100% fossil-free electricity and we are actively expanding renewable energy solutions across our operations.

Reducing GHG Emissions

To ensure transparency, accountability, and continuous internal improvements, we monitor our CO₂ emissions at Scope 1, 2, and 3 levels on a yearly basis. By prioritizing sustainable energy sources and actively tracking our carbon footprint, we are not only minimizing our environmental impact but also paving the way for a cleaner future. Since 2019, we have achieved a 57% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (scope 1 and 2).

Bioenergy, Ground Heating, Solar Power, Heat Recovery, Electric Boilers

Fossil-free Energy Solutions

Mirka has implemented a range of innovative fossil-free energy solutions, including bioenergy, ground heating, solar power, heat recovery systems, and electric boilers.

Mirka has partnered with Adven, a leading energy company, to enhance its sustainable energy initiatives. This collaboration has led to the development of a power plant adjacent to our Jeppo factory, which produces energy for the production facilities using production side streams. In addition to converting production waste into energy, the plant captures heat and purifies water from our production processes.

At the Oravais factory, our partnership with Adven has led to a transition from fossil fuels to fossil-free energy sources. Since 2000, Adven has produced energy for our factory, initially using fuel oil, then switching to pellet heating, and later incorporating heat recovery solutions. Currently, heat production is solely based on renewable energy.

At our Jakobstad factory, we have implemented a hybrid energy solution featuring a geoenergy field, complemented by air-to-water heat pumps and solar panels. This system has reduced annual carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 900 tons.

Manufacturing with Solar Power

Mirka has established its own 2.5 MWp solar power park next to the Jeppo manufacturing facility in Finland, providing renewable energy directly to the factory. Each year, it generates around 2000 MWh of electricity—equivalent to powering 500 homes for a year or charging 250 000 electric car batteries. This investment is a key step in transitioning to fossil-free energy solutions, reducing our carbon footprint, and increasing energy self-sufficiency.

This is one of many initiatives aimed at achieving 100% fossil-free energy consumption. Mirka is committed to prioritizing local renewable energy sources and strengthening local partnerships to drive more sustainable energy solutions.
