Questions and Answers

What sandpaper is used on cars?

Automotive sandpaper is typically aluminium oxide, silicon carbide, or ceramic-based. The type of sandpaper used on cars depends on the stage of the refinishing process.

Coarse grits (40–180) remove paint and rust and shape body filler. Medium grits (220–600) smooth primer and prepare surfaces for paint. Fine grits (800–1500) refine clear coat imperfections and smooth paint layers. Ultra-fine grits (2000–5000) are used to remove defects before polishing.

Sanding with ultra-fine grits typically involves wet sanding; however, Iridium Soft is notable for being a dry sanding abrasive that excels in precision sanding at ultra-fine grit sizes (up to P2000).

Which is better, wet or dry sanding?

The choice of wet or dry sanding usually depends on what you are sanding or which stage in the surface finishing process you are in.

Wet sanding is often preferred for achieving a smooth, high-quality finish, especially on paint or automotive surfaces. It reduces dust and prevents sandpaper clogging, but requires more cleaning because of the water that is used.

Dry sanding, on the other hand, is faster and better for removing material quickly, for example when you are shaping metal or preparing surfaces for further treatment.

With Iridium Soft, you get the best of both worlds: fast, dust-free dry sanding with a fine precision grit.

What are foam sanding pads used for?

Foam sanding pads are excellent for getting into tight spaces, curves, and details that other types of abrasives can't reach or sand as smoothly.

The soft foam distributes pressure evenly, preventing excessive material removal and burn-through on thin layers of primer or clear coat.

Iridium Soft’s flexible foam base conforms to curves and contours for smooth, even sanding, making it the ideal abrasive for sanding car bodies. The featured Multifit dust extraction system also helps keep the surface cleaner and improves visibility during sanding.
